Skip vs Tip: Which One Should You Use?

Posted 1 March 2014

Getting rid of large amounts of rubbish, rubble and other waste can be tedious at best and involve a lot of hard work. There are several options you could try to make the job a little more bearable. The two most obvious are hiring a skip or driving the rubbish to the tip yourself. But which is best for homeowners?

Convenience

Hiring a skip or a skip bag is by far the most convenient choice if you have a large amount of waste to dispose of. The skip company will arrange and deliver the skip to you and plan when to take it away. All you have to do is fill it up in your own time.

Driving your waste to the tip is often considered the cheaper option, but they fail to factor in fuel and time. It all counts: driving backwards and forwards, breaking the waste down into the appropriate types and placing it in the correct containers. If the tip is not on your doorstep, the costs will rise higher and higher with every trip you take, and it can take a long time to bag everything up.

Quantity of Waste

The amount of waste you need to shift is a big factor in deciding whether to drive to the tip with it yourself. If you can manage the lot in a single run, it may be worth collecting it up and driving it there. But if you have to do more than a couple of runs, you will have to take the distance you have to travel into account, as well as the mess in your vehicle.

Four or five runs to a tip which is 5 miles away doesn’t just mean a 30 minute chunk out of your day. You will face loading and unloading at both ends of the journey as well as sorting the waste out at the tip. Busy tip days will also mean queueing and more potential for waiting whilst full containers are replaced. This could turn what may be an hour of filling a skip or a skip bag into a day of running around trying to get the job done – all with the additional price of petrol.

Type of Waste

When considering tip or skip, you should consider the type of waste you are moving.

Dirty or dusty waste will get into the upholstery in your car and potentially cause permanent damage. After a day of running around moving waste to a tip, you do not want to have to spend the next day cleaning your car, only to find holes and tears in the seats or scratches in the paintwork.

If you are having to break apart furniture, this can also be time consuming and be awkward to fit into your car. A Croydon skip, or even a cage lorry service, would be the simpler option.

Skip Placement

Some people may simply not consider a skip because they know it can’t be left on their road. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to take everything to the tip yourself. A good skip company will offer a wait and load service and may even be able to supply labour to help you get the job done quickly. And if a skip isn’t an option, there’s always the convenient, affordable alternative: the skip bag.
